Coaching Philosophy
Brave, Creative, Leaders for Life
At Legends, we build players who can win the ball, beat a defender, and create a goal: players other teams have to plan for. That starts with skill, and it’s why we develop players differently.
Skill first, because it’s the hardest thing to teach
Tactics can be learned quickly at any age. Elite technique can’t. The years before 11v11 are the window to build it, so every Legends player trains to be:
A confident dribbler. Close control and deceptive 1v1 moves to beat opponents.
A dangerous finisher. Comfortable shooting with both feet under pressure.
Fast in the head. Able to read the game and choose the right option instantly.
We raise the pressure session by session, so the creativity holds up in real games.
Then we teach them how to use it
Skill is the foundation; the game is where it comes alive. As players grow, their training widens from the ball at their feet to the whole field:
When to dribble, when to pass, and how to combine with teammates to break down a defense.
Reading the game: spotting space, making runs, and understanding their role in the team’s shape.
Playing as a unit: pressing together, defending as a group, and attacking quickly when we win the ball.
The older the player, the more the team game becomes the focus. Because they already have the skill, they’re ready for it.
How we play: Brave and creative going forward, disciplined and together without the ball. Our players aren’t afraid to take a risk, and they work as a team to win it back.
Every player develops
No bench-sitting. Players develop by playing.
No pigeonholing. Young players learn multiple positions before specializing.
Effort over outcome. We praise brave decisions and hard work, not just results. Mistakes are part of learning: no blame, no shame, no guilt.
Every player matters. The best player on the team is held to the same standard as everyone else.
A path to the top
Legends has been developing players in Kansas City since 1989. Our teams have won more than 50 Kansas and Missouri state championships, and nearly 400 alumni have played in college.
In Lee’s Summit, players can grow from HappyFeet and 4v4 to JRs and Premier teams, with opportunities to move up to Legends’ top teams and national platforms as they develop.
How parents can help
Let them solve it. A player who’s told the answer from the sideline never learns to find it. Cheer the effort, and let the game be the teacher.
The goal isn’t just a great soccer player. It’s a brave, creative leader for life.
